West Coast Vancouver Island

Beach walks, organized by what they actually demand

Not every beach here is Long Beach. Some are sheltered coves reachable at any tide; others are fully exposed and change completely between low and high water.

Sheltered coves versus the open coast

Exposure changes everything about a walk

Small pocket coves tucked behind headlands stay relatively calm even when the open coast is rough, making them a better choice on a windy day than trying to walk the full exposed length of Long Beach. The trade-off is usually a shorter, less dramatic walk and smaller parking areas.

Fully exposed sections change dramatically with tide: creek crossings that don't exist at low water can cut off a route at high tide, and wind picks up noticeably with no headland to block it. Match the walk to the day's actual conditions using the Coast Clock rather than picking a beach off a list.
