Tofino: the busier northern base
Tofino is the departure point for most boat excursions and has the widest range of food and lodging on this coast — it is also the most congested, especially in summer. This page covers what that trade-off actually looks like.

Harbour & town
A working harbour built around excursions
Tofino's harbour is the departure point for whale-watching boats, hot springs tours, bear-watching trips, and water taxis into Clayoquot Sound — this is the main reason most visitors choose it over Ucluelet. The town itself is small and walkable, with most restaurants, shops, and tour operators within a few blocks of the harbour.
Summer weekends bring real congestion: Main Street parking fills early, and Highway 4 into town can back up. Arriving before mid-morning or after the dinner rush avoids most of it.
