West Coast Vancouver Island

What to pack: rain matters more than sun

This is a rain-forward coast in every season. The right gear list looks different from a typical beach-trip packing list — here's what actually gets used.

Top priority
Waterproof outer layer
Footwear
Grippy, wet-ready shoes or boots
Cold water
Wetsuit for any surf activity
Electronics
Dry bag, non-negotiable

The non-negotiables

Rain gear, real footwear, and a dry bag

A genuinely waterproof outer layer — not just water-resistant — matters more here than almost anywhere else in a typical Canadian trip, including in July. Footwear needs real grip for wet boardwalks and uneven beach terrain; sandals are a liability on the Rainforest Trail's stairs after rain.

Anyone getting in the water for surfing needs a wetsuit appropriate to the season (see the surfing guide for thickness by month), and a simple dry bag protects phones and cameras from both rain and beach spray, which reach further inland than most people expect.

Waterproofing and footwear do more work on this trip than anything else in the bag.
